Tampon Run, a canvas game built by teen coders

Tampon Run game by Andrea Gonzales and Sophie Houser, via Badass Lady Creatives

If I had been as level-headed in high school as Andrea Gonzales and Sophie Houser, I would know far fewer Taking Back Sunday lyrics. These two Girls Who Code students built for their final project a canvas game called Tampon Run. You scuttle through town as a cute-as-a-button, ponytailed sprite, jumping over boys to collect boxes of tampons—and shooting said tampons at oncoming enemies.

The title sequence explains the manifesto behind the game: to normalize and de-stigmatize the phenomenon of menstruation, something that frankly terrifies (or at very least, grosses out) a generous portion of the population. Props as well to Andrea and Sophia for having the consideration to note that most, not all, women menstruate.

You can play the game online, and poke around in the code if you’re curious. Note: my new favorite code comment is //STUFF??

Marianna’s charming illustrations feature characters with delightfully egg-shaped heads; her aesthetic reminds me of a cross between the Moomins and especially old-school Lemmings. Marianna is interested in taking on…

We particularly dig Emily’s design and illustration work when it wanders off in the direction of “art”. See more projects on Emily’s…

Recent Grads Week: Sally Carmichael →

Whatever they’re teaching at the University of Kansas, it’s working. We’re so impressed with the level of design work coming out of KU, and one of our favorite portfolios is that of Sally Carmichael. She is the new Publication Design Fellow at Chronicle Books in San Francisco, but is available for freelance projects—Sally’s publication design…
